A lil' Q & A ~ Blame Sally

In 1999, a little-known but monumental happenstance occurred: the Lilith Fair and OzzFest were accidentally booked in the same Indiana venue on the same sweltering August night. While Rob Zombie and Paula Cole duked it out for control of the venue and fans, Monica, Renee, Pam and Jeri waited patiently for Sarah McLachlan’s autograph. Unknowingly rocked to their musical cores by the sight and sound of the Indigo Girls jamming with Pantera, the formation of Blame Sally occurred.

This all could be a musical urban legend, but with metallic chords and agile melodies it's hard to not believe Blame Sally's sound isn't created from a blend of black metal and estrogen-tinged folk. The Triple Door crashed Blame Sally's road trip with a lil' Q&A to get a glimpse at what goes on inside the tour van.

The Triple Door: Name the number 1 song listed on your iTunes' "25 Most Played" playlist?
Blame Sally: Bird In hand by Blame Sally

TD: Name your biggest guilty pleasure, musically?
Blame Sally: "In da tub" by Mz. Peaches

TD: When you're not playing music, what are you doing?
Blame Sally: Packing our suitcases, loading the van and driving it all over tarnation, AKA our nation

TD: What was the first song you ever played/sang?
Pam: "Endless love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie at my friend's wedding when I was 16
Renee: "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf. I was 12 and heard a boy playing it, that's what made me want to play guitar.
Jeri:"Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies. My friends and I were in the rec room trying to start a band, but I was the only one who played.
Monica: According to the rest of the band, I'm the freak. I played Bach and classical piano for a very long time before I started writing songs.

TD: What was the best concert you ever attended?
Pam: Michael Jackson, The Thriller Tour
Renee: Front row seats for Fleetwood Mac at the LA forum
Jeri: Prince, Purple Rain
Monica: Kate Wolf Music Festival 2009 with Taj Mahal, David Lindley, Los Lobos, Keb Mo, Richard Thompson and a bunch more (including Blame sally)

TD: What's you most embarrassing on stage experience?
Pam's drums fell off the stage into the lap of somebody in the audience. We kept going, though.

See Blame Sally and Rebecca Pronsky w/ Blvd Park Wednesday, March 28th, at 7:30pm on the Mainstage. Tickets here>>

A lil' Q & A ~ Girlyman's Tylan Greenstein

The jaunty, improvisational harmonies emanating from the cheerful, multi-instrumental band aptly named, Girlyman, reminds audience members to not take life too seriously. The Triple Door interviewed one of the founding creative minds behind Girlyman, Tylan Greenstein - affectionately called Ty, to gather some insight into the band’s playful approach to their sound.

The Triple Door: Name one song that's on your iTunes' "25 Most Played" playlist?
Tylan Greenstein: "Never Going Back Again" - Fleetwood Mac

TD: Name your biggest guilty pleasure, musically?
Ty: Justin Timberlake

TD: When you're not playing music, what are you doing?
Ty: Cooking, yoga, meditation, doing work for the band and walking my dog

TD: What was the best concert you ever attended?
Ty: Probably the Jackson's Victory Tour - it was epic! or maybe Nina Simone. Or Ani DiFranco back in the 90's.

TD: If you could perform in any city in the world, where would you?
Ty: Florence, Italy.

TD: What's your most embarrassing on stage experience?
Ty: I completely forgot the chords to a song halfway through and had to start over. Not a big deal, I guess, but I was mortified!

TD: What hidden talents do you have?
Ty: I can sit in silent mediation for ten days (and have). I can make a very mean coffee. I can box!

Catch Girlyman live on March 24th at 8pm on the Mainstage. Tickets: here

A lil' Q & A ~ Lucy Wainwright Roche

The Triple Door welcomes the crystal-clear-voiced, singer-songwriter, Lucy Wainwright Roche to the stage. To get an idea of what is behind the music, we interviewed the funny and straightforward gem musician to throw the light on a stage presence that one has to see to believe.

The Triple Door: Name one song that's on your iTunes' "25 Most Played" playlist?

Lucy Wainwright Roche: And then you - Greg Laswell

TD: Name your biggest guilty pleasure, musically?

Lucy: Maybe Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend"? Except I don't feel guilty about it, I feel incredibly happy about that song in every way.

TD: When you're not playing music, what are you doing?

Lucy: Usually driving to the next city! Or, if I'm off the road I really like to cook, enjoy NYC and babysit.

TD: What was the first song you ever played/sang?

Lucy: "El Condor Pasa" Simon and Garfunkel. My Aunt Terre taught me to play it.

TD: If you could play with any musican, living or dead, who would it be?

Lucy: Hmmm. That's a tough one. I'd love to see Joni Mitchell do a concert. But I wouldn't want to play with her. I'm not brave enough for that!

TD: If you could perform in any city in the world, where would you?

Lucy: I'd love to play in Russia at some point.

TD: What's your most embarrassing on stage experience?

Lucy: When I was touring with the Indigo Girls they would ahve me sing "Closer to Fine" with them at the end of each show. I realized after about 7 shows that I'd been singing the wrong lyrics repeatedly. It wasn't that terrible but I felt pretty sheepish about it.

TD: What inspires you to play music?

Lucy: One of the things I find most useful in writing and making music is watching other people play- people I admire - and really watching and listening to how they do what they do. I think it's very inspiring to watch people do what they do best AND it also helps ME figure out what I do best.

TD: What hidden talents do you have?

Lucy: I'm a great parallel parker.

Even if the idea is daunting to Lucy, we aren't the only ones that think she could totally rock the stage with the likes of Joni Mitchell! See Lucy Wainwright Roche with The Local Strangers on March 14th at 7:30pm on the Mainstage! Tickets can be purchased here>>
